Before the Holodomor occurred, Ukraine was suffering from a bad economy. The Soviet Union was at rule by Joseph Stalin. Joseph made it a mission to try and reshape the soviet economy. He used secret police to kill the ones who weren't making enough money for the Soviet's economy. Because of this, 1.8 million Ukrainian peasants were deported and millions more dead from frequent killings. This caused a major uproar in Ukraine, by the fact that peasants were being treated as animals. On December 27th, 1929, the Kulak(peasants) were considered a class in society, signed for by Stalin. From this Stalin ordered that the ones who could work and make money for the Soviet Union were to be shipped off to places like Siberia and the Kulak who couldn't work, were to be held captive and killed by the secret police. This killing/elimination of the Kulak and the policies being made by Stalin, ultimately caused the rise of the famine that killed 7-10 million in the years between 1930-1937. The common method of death in this case was starvation, people would go 3-5 months without eating a single thing. They were left to rot by the Soviet Russians.
As far as legal settlements after the Holodomor was concluded, the Kulaks who survived asked for the release from Moscow, which was denied by the government.
Stallin being the leader behind this genocide, didn't suffer any criminal charges but he did end up dying in the early 1950's.
Today Ukraine is in crisis with Russia as far as giving up part of their land, this could be the cause of a WW3. Ukraine is an emerging free market economy, that is rich with coal and petroleum products.
Ukraine is ran by many branches with a part presidential leader that has say over all the government branches. People in Ukraine are very settled and happy to be there, government doesn't force citizens to be a certain way, and there is very little discrimination. As a conclusion Ukraine is now a rapidly growing society full of rich resources that are retrieved by people who love doing what they do. I believe the Holodomor truly doesn't affect Ukraine's society today.
